Crescent Beach Field Trip

The weather was not perfect but we still had a great time at Crescent Beach.
We created patterns in the sand, built sand castles, dug rivers to float boats in, explored the tide pool, had a picnic lunch, and sorted seaweed.
Thank you to all the chaperones who helped to make it a great day!

May Highlights!

May has been an exciting month.

At the beginning of the month we had a fun field trip to Estabrooks to celebrate Arbor Day.  The students had a great time building fairy houses, listening to a book about fairy houses, and learning about bugs that harm trees.

We kicked off our unit about the ocean with a visit from Carol Steingart from Coastal Encounters.
The children learned about how plants and animals in tidepools survive.  Then students had a chance to see and touch over 40 different types of plants and animals from the Maine coast.

Things We Did in School This Week

Here are some things we did in school this week which the kids wanted to tell you about.

We played word wall Jenga to practice reading and writing sight words.

We watched a performance.  It was called the "Magic Theater."  It was super fun.

In P.E  we threw balls and tried to catch them with milk cartons.

In library we picked new books.

We had a special music with a guest teacher.

We wrote All About books.

We chose the books we will turn into All About posters

We added problem and solution to our story maps.

In art we made accordion books.

Ms. B was our sub because Mrs.  Lemay was out.

We continued to practice subtraction.

We saw pictures of what Clifford did over vacation.  He went climbing.

What We Learned This Week...

At closing circle today I asked the class to reflect on what they learned this week.
Here is what they shared.

We learned.......
how to read our reader's theater stories better
about bold words
about subtraction
we can make lots of things out of clay
about "All About" books
a song called "One Green Jellybean"
about smooth transitions

We practiced .....
reading new books
playing four square
reading quietly

We made butterflies out of construction paper and learned about butterfly body parts.
We passed a pretend cookie around the circle and each shared something about it.  This helped us with our "All About Books."

Be sure to check out your child's kidblog to see a great Reader's Theater.

New Reading Spots

The students were excited to choose new reading spots this week!

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

The Shooting Shark Stars have been super busy learning.

During reader's workshop our focus has been learning about the differences between fiction and nonfiction.  We have talked about fiction being a made up story from the author's brain and nonfiction being full of facts.  We have sorted our classroom books, books from our book bags, and pictures of books from extra book orders.   While reading with your child discuss whether the book is fiction or nonfiction and why.

During writer's workshop, writers have been busy writing how-to-books.  Each student is publishing a how-to poster.  The posters will be hanging in the hallway when they are complete.  Next week we will begin persuasive writing. I cannot wait to see what the children try to convince us of.  Don't be surprised if you get a letter full of reasons why you should get a pet or a list of reasons why your child should be able to eat cookies for breakfast.

During math time we have learned about the importance of a standard measurement. We measured objects around the classroom using our feet and realized that two people could measure the same thing and get different lengths. So we measured again using standard feet.

To reinforce this concept we read How Big is a Foot.  In this book the king uses his feet to measure how big the queen's bed needs to be.  But when the apprentice builds the bed he uses his feet.  The bed was much to small.  Finally they solve the problem by making a sculpture of the kings foot to use as the standard measurement tool.

After reading we made two "beds."  First, we used our feet and pretended they were the apprentices feet.  Then we used a standard foot and pretended they were the kings feet.  There was a big difference.

Today students wrote survey questions and collected data from their classmates.  Tomorrow they will turn the data into graphs and analyze them.

Remember no school this Friday.  It is a teacher inservice day!
